I remember my first time walking into a gym. I stood at the entrance for five minutes pretending to check my phone because I did not know where to go, what to use, or whether I was even allowed to be in certain areas. Nobody tells you how intimidating it is when you have never done it before.
So here is the guide I wish I had. No condescension, no assumed knowledge, just honest answers to the questions you are too embarrassed to Google.
What to Wear (It Matters Less Than You Think)
You do not need matching sets. You do not need Lululemon. You need:
- Leggings that are squat-proof — bend over in a mirror at home first to check
- A sports bra that actually supports you during movement
- A top you feel comfortable in — cropped, oversized, tank top, whatever
- Clean athletic shoes with flat-ish soles — running shoes are fine to start
Your First Day: The Honest Play-by-Play
- Walk in like you belong. Because you do. Everyone in there started somewhere.
- Start with the treadmill or elliptical. Ten to fifteen minutes to warm up and get comfortable in the space.
- Move to the machines, not free weights. Machines guide your movement so you cannot really do them wrong. Start with leg press, lat pulldown, and chest press.
- Do three sets of twelve reps on each machine. Use a weight where the last two reps feel challenging but doable.
- Stretch for five minutes before leaving.
Unwritten Gym Rules Nobody Tells You
- Wipe down every machine after you use it — there are spray bottles and paper towels everywhere
- Do not sit on a machine scrolling your phone — if you are resting, stand next to it
- You can absolutely wear headphones and ignore everyone — most people do
- Nobody is watching you. Genuinely. Everyone is focused on their own workout
- It is completely normal to not know what you are doing. YouTube form checks in real time if you need to
The First Month Plan
Go three times per week. Follow the same simple routine each time for the first two weeks. On week three, add one new exercise. On week four, slightly increase your weights. That is it. By month two, you will walk in like a different person.
